Wexford is typically seen as a summer destination. And it’s no wonder, with miles of golden beaches, stunning formal gardens and so many things to see and do on those inevitable occasional rainy days! However once the days begin to cool and the kids are all back in school, Wexford doesn’t shut down! It becomes an extremely beautiful and romantic place to visit. Here are my Top ten romantic things to do in Wexford!
1. Go For a Walk
There is nothing nicer than wrapping up and taking a walk with your beloved through crunching leaves in the fresh air. Thanks to the Wexford Walking Trail it’s easy to find the right one for you. The most romantic? It has to be Tintern Abbey! Built by William and Isobel Marshal in 1203 it is a huge ruined Abbey set in wonderful parklands, a wood, and a gorgeous walled garden, filled with apple trees, just waiting to be picked!
2. Go for a Bike Ride
Cycle Wexford is a wonderful initiative, you book a couple of bikes with them and they will leave them at a designated site for you to collect and after your day out you simply leave them back were you found them! I suggest you go for a ride in Ravens Wood. This gorgeous forest grows alongside Curracloe Beach . Feeling relaxed, take the flat path that borders the woods and fields beyond. If your feeling fit, take the path that runs closer to the beach, ups and downs along the dunes!
3. Beer Tasting
Yellowbelly Craft Beers are based in Simon Lamberts Pub Wexford Town. This lovely old pub is that perfect dark cosy Irish pub that;s ideal for hiding away in! They have a great selection of both their own beers and “guest beers to sample” get the right person on the right day and you might even get a glimpse of the brewery hidden away in the cellar! They also do a fantastic lunch and dinner menu so you wont need to move all day!
4. Horse Riding
That cheesy romantic cliche, a couple riding their horses across a wide sandy beach! You can make it a reality here in Wexford! Kiltennel Stables can provide you with everything you might need including the beach! Its only €30 per hour and its a great way to get to know a new partner!
5. Take a Pottery Class
Let out your inner Demi and Patrick at Ballyelland Pottery! Mairead Stafford is a wonderfully talented artist and entertaining teacher. Her studio is housed in a gorgeous romantic mill just outside Wexford town and she runs workshops and classes for all age groups including grown ups! And in case your art work looks like something Maireads cat threw up, she has lots of lovely things you can purchase and claim as your own!
6. Visit the Tinahely Farm Shop
Ok I know, not strictly in Wexford, but so close to the border I’ll allow it! Tinehely Village itself is a pretty little village about 20 minutes from Gorey and nestled in a gorgeous valley. The Farmshop owned by Philip and Rebecca is a great place to while away a few hours. The shop is simply bursting with food, gifts, retro kitchenware and home baked goods. Their coffee shop serves the most delicious lunches (Rebecca is Darina Allens niece, so it’s no wonder!) It is furnished with lots of great upcycled furniture, including some really comfy old armchairs and has great views of the surrounding countryside. Before you go, take a wander down to the animals and marvel at the fluffiest chickens you’ll ever see!
7. Get Scared!
They say being scared is a great way to bond, and where better than Irelands most haunted House! Extremely busy in the summer months, in September the house is open Wednesday to Saturday and has three tours a day. The weather is more appropriate too, especially if its a misty cold day!
8. Attend a Trad Session
There is nothing more fun than a proper rousing trad session and Wexford has some of the best! There are sessions on every night of the week (check out here for a full list across the county) You can stagger home in each other’s arms weeping for dear old Ireland!
9. Go Karting
R-One Go Karting is a large indoor go karting track in Wexford Town. Packed with kids during the summer months, in Autumn you’ll have the place to your selves! Time to find out who’s the better drive once and for all!
Take a Tour!
Take a break from the driving, relax and enjoy exploring Wexford together! You can opt for the budget friendly Heritage Tours Wexford that offers small bus tours across the county including movie themed tours. Or be indulgent and take a day out with me! A vehicle to yourselves, sipping on a glass of whiskey, flipping through the Visit Wexford Guide and getting an abundance of local stories as you cross the county!
